9.gaining(advancing) issues (n) 上漲股票(=gainers);losing issues 下跌股票
Gaining issues outnumbered losing ones by a 5-to-4 margin in late trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
 在紐約證券交易所稍晚的交易中,上漲股票的數量僅以5比4之差領先下跌股票。
10.firm (adj) (市場、股票)穩固的
Purchasing data kept the treasury bond market firm, which gave a lift to stock.
 持續的買氣使國庫券市場趨堅,許多股票的股價都上揚了。
11.dividend (n) 股利
GE said it intended to reduce its annual dividend to 6 cents per share from 19 cents.
 奇異公司宣稱將要調降年度股利19分降為每股6分。
12.major currencies (n)主要貨幣
The report helped push up the U.S. dollar against other major currencies.
 這份報導推升美元與其他主要貨幣匯兌的堅挺。
13.stable (adj) 穩定的;安定的
 Interest rates should be stable or rise in the near term.
 利率短期會穩步向上。
14.trading (n) (股票、債券的)交易
 Trading was calm ahead of a pivotal report on June employment.
 在六月份就業報告出爐前,交易量平穩地推移。
15.offset (v)彌補;抵銷
 Sales of the cancer drug Taxol helped offset slumping sales of its heart medicine Capten.
 癌症藥品Taxol的銷售,彌補了心臟病藥物Capten暴跌所造成的損失。

Sony Corp. said yesterday it will slash about 6 percent of its global work force, cloes 11 plants and shrink or terminate 15 unprofitable operations in an ambitious restructuring bid to revive its stumbling electronics business.
新力公司昨天宣布將裁掉全球6%的員工,關掉11座工廠,縮減或終結15家未獲利的營運事業,以求積極地讓新力重新改造,讓這家受挫的電子大廠活力再現。
The turnaround plan comes under the fresh leadership of Howard Stringer, a British-American dual citizen who was named chief executive of the Japanese electronics and entertainment company in March as the first foreigner to head Sony.
這項改造計劃是奉新任總裁史特林格之命所進行,史特林格同時擁有英、美國籍,於三月時被任命為日本這家電子娛樂大廠的執行長,是第一位執掌新力公司的外籍人士。
Sony, known as a pioneer in electronics first with the transistor radio and later the Walkman, has seen some of its glory dimmed by Asian rivals like Samsung Electronics Co. and other lesser known companies that are offering cheaper prices.
新力這家電子大廠最早以電晶體收音機為先驅,隨後以隨身聽聞名。面臨三星電子與其他較不知名的亞洲品牌之低價競爭,新力公司的光芒已經逐漸黯淡。

General Electric today announced the acquisition of a British telecommunications company.
GE公司今天宣布購入英國一家通訊公司。
★Merger (n),合併案
The two companies announced their long awaited merger will be finalized next month.
兩家公司宣布期待已久的合併案下個月會敲定。
★Joint venture (n),合作案
The U.S. largest petroleum company has announced a joint venture with a British company to look for oil in the Arctic.
美國最大的石油公司宣布與一家英國的公司合作開發北極的石油。
★Anti-trust (n),反托拉斯
Justice officials are investigating whether the merger violates anti-trust laws.
法務部官員正在調查該合併案是否違反反托拉斯法。
★Cash-flow problem (phrase),現金周轉不靈
Due to a cash-flow problem, the company is asking the bank for a two-month reprieve on interest payments.
由於現金周轉不靈,這家公司請求銀行緩繳貸款利息兩個月。
★Creditors (n),債主、債權人
Creditors are expected to seek a solution that would avoid bankruptcy.
債權人將想個辦法避免這家公司破產。
★ Credit card debt (n),信用卡債務
Economists express concern over how quickly credit card debt in Taiwan is rising.
對台灣信用卡債務快速增加,經濟學家表示擔憂。
★Write off bad loans,註銷呆帳
The banks in Taiwan have been forced to write off more than ten billion NT dollars in bad loans.
台灣各銀行被迫註銷逾百億台幣呆帳。

Adidas has sold Salomon, its winter sports unit, and put in a take over bid for Reebok, Nike U.S. rival. A partnership with Reebok would increase the shoe company U.S. market share to 20 percent-behind Nike by 30 percent. However, its combined worldwide sales of 11 billion dollars would be right on the heels of Nike 13 billion.
  愛迪達出售旗下冬季運動事業單位Salmon,並出價併購Nike(耐吉)的美國競爭對手銳跑(Reebok)。與銳跑合併將增加該鞋業公司在美國的市占達20%,落後耐吉30%。然而,其合併後的全球銷售額將達110億元,緊追在耐吉的130億元之後。
▓實用字彙
   capital (n.) 資金,資本
   The company is trying to raise 100 million dollars in capital.
   公司正在籌措一億的資金。
提示:Capital的用法很多,有foreign capital(外資)、capital assets(資本〔固定〕資產)、capital gains (資本收益)等。一家公司的資本額叫capitalization,借款的本金也叫capital,聽到capital 記得與資金或資本有關,意思大概就懂了。
   mortgage rates (n.) 房屋貸款利率
   Relatively low mortgage rates are stimulating the housing market.
   房貸利率低刺激了房市。
   Mortgage rate 是指房貸利率,而銀行借給消費者買房子的錢叫「housing loan」。
   surplus (n.) 盈餘
   Reduced spending measures have left the government with a budgetary surplus for the first time    ever.
  節流讓政府第一次有了預算盈餘。
提示: Deficit 及 surplus 多半用來說預算的赤字及盈餘,profit及loss則用於公司行號。另一種說法,如果公司整體來說賺錢,稱為「in the black」,如果賠錢,則是「in the red」。
